What will people say about you at you when you’re gone? What is the legacy you want to leave behind? Do you want to be be remembered as someone who played it safe, or as someone who took chances, live their best life with integrity and authenticity?.

Asking yourself “are you living your best life” is a great question to delve into now and then. One, because we all have things we could be doing better, and two, it makes you look deeper and gives you an incredible opportunity for self reflection.

In this post, Mr Sayed Mia wants to share with you the lessons he’s learned on how to live the life you want, one that others will remember.

Be Generous. Making the world a better place–by being free with your time, energy and money–is a good place to start. By doing so you can create a domino effect that encourages others to follow in your footsteps. It’s a known fact that generosity is contagious and you don’t have to have millions to do it, even the smallest gesture can help give someone comfort in their time of need. Pay it Forward, you’ll find that the reward and how it makes you feel is greater than the gift itself.

In order to be truly independent, it’s important to live within your means.

Your freedom is limited by owing money to anyone, whether it’s a credit card company or a family member, so set yourself up for an unrestricted life by saving for the things you want and spending with a plan.

Finding a job that makes you happy most of the time is possible, and it’s worth taking risks to discover what fulfills you. Strive for happiness. This doesn’t just apply to your professional career but in your personal life as well. Do the things that set your soul alight. Be happy with the people you surround yourself with, and never compromise your happiness for anyone.

Living your best life has a lot to do with being authentic. Authenticity is about presence, living in the moment with conviction and confidence and staying true to yourself. There’s never any doubt or questioning the integrity of an authentic individual. Their behavior, in terms of ethics and morals, is as predictable as a spectacular thunder storm during Summer in Joburg. You know what you’re going to get.

Always keep an open-mind. We attract the people and things we want in life when we’re open-minded and receptive. This often leads to opportunities and new ways of thinking that expand our minds and bring us ideas that add value to our lives. Remember to keep watching your thoughts, words and actions change and influence the world around you in a bolder, more positive way!

Be kind to those around you. Watch how radically your life begins to change. For one thing, the simple act of being kind does boost your happiness — even if slightly.

Live in the moment. There’s nothing more real than a person who lives in the moment without worry or concern for needless matters. The greatest advice ever given was never to worry about things not in your control? Be completely present by concentrating on exactly what is happening in your life at that precise time. It allows us to remove the toxic clutter and or people from our lives to live our best in the moment. Presence and concern for right now are achieved when we eliminate distractions. Think of it like junk mail going right into your spam folder! If it doesn’t belong in your life, it belongs in the trash.

Never be jealous of someone else. Always stay focused and stay in your own lane. Whether you fear losing a relationship or wish you had things other people have, you need to let go. When it comes to your relationships, or career, nothing is more attractive than genuine confidence.

Stay healthy and active! Like the saying goes, an apple a day! But it’s true. You can only live your best life if you are at your healthiest. So look after you. Eat well and exercise.

Never to be afraid to fail. Failing is almost always a blessing in disguise.  Failing can be a good way to learn valuable lessons. Successful entrepreneurs, for example, realize the importance of failure as quickly as possible when launching a new venture because the faster you find bugs and problems, the quicker you can get rid of them. Failing isn’t easy or fun, but you can’t let it dictate how you live your life. So get rid of the fear, and rather embrace the challenge.

Create your own opportunities and be committed to personal growth. You can wait for opportunities. Or you can go out there and create your own opportunities. The latter is definite and much more empowering. Be committed to your growth. In the Map Of Consciousness, there are 17 levels of consciousness. The higher your consciousness level, the richer your life experience. Achieving a higher consciousness comes from your commitment to your growth.

Last but certainly not least, LOVE life. We’re all living on a planet with millions of species, 30,000 different life forms, and over 7 billion people, and everyone is thriving in their own way, existing, co-existing, and co-creating. There’s so much we don’t know out there and so much to be experienced that it’s just wonderful. As you live and walk your purpose, remember to love life. It’s the only way to really live.

Mr Mia’s ex students had so many wonderful memories to share and many complimentary things to say about his old teacher.

For those who don’t know, Education has always been an important part of Mr Mia’s life. It remains so today. In the early 1970’s Sayed Mia was an Afrikaans teacher. In those dark days of apartheid, Sayed was one of a handful of teachers to have a university degree in the Indian community. Having obtained his teacher’s diploma in 1968 from the University of Durban, he loved to impart knowledge and learning to the children around him in his classroom and his community.

Even going as far in the early 1970’s to sponsor the ‘Time to Learn’ project – a part time homework and study group which Mr Mia sponsored solely off his teachers salary to aid students who had no electricity or facilities at home. To supplement his income as a teacher, Sayed set off on his first trailblazing adventure. He started out in the insurance industry as a part time broker and by the mid 1970’s had excelled to such an extent that was able to secure his own brokerage firm in the socially underdeveloped Lenasia, at that time.

Nelson Mandela Day

On this, Nelson Mandela Day, we remember the Father of our nation. We give back 67 minutes of our time to others in need – in his memory, to keep his legacy alive. With that signature shuffle, calm demeanor and a smile that endeared him to all; Madiba was beloved by all, he was a giant on the worlds stage. But to South Africans he represented the best of humanity and what we all aspired to be.

Today Mr Mia looks back at the lessons he learned from his friend, Tata Madiba, with quotes and anecdotes, and what we can do going forward to ensure that his legacy is one that lives forever.



“I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for. But, my lord, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die”.

Madiba spent the better part of adult life fighting for a free, fair and democratic South Africa. 27 years he spent on Robben Island, and after his release, he carried South Africa through its first democratic election. After his term, he spent the rest of his life tirelessly campaigning for peace and equality.



“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again”.

When all is said and done, when the milestones of your life stretch out before your eyes, it won’t be the successes that define your character. It will, as Madiba said, be the way you responded to failure and never quit.



“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.

Change can be met with resistance from people who fear it. Or who don’t understand it. There are few things more effective as an impetus for change than knowledge — people can’t fight for something if they don’t understand what they are fighting for. The premise of knowledge and always learning more was something very close to Madiba’s heart and one which he always encouraged.


“It always seems impossible until it’s done”.

We are capable of so much more than we give ourselves credit for. Mandela’s simple sentiment is a refreshing, much needed reminder. You can do it. Anyone can, as he reminds us: “Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do.”



“A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination”.

Often in today’s society, kindness and compassion are often mistaken for weakness? And that there are smart people who attempt to dumb themselves down so as not to be branded “nerdy” or “brainy?” As Madiba always pointed out, being smart and being kind make a person a force to be reckoned with.



“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite”.

It could have been so easy, and so justified for Madiba to have chosen to become bitter after being imprisoned for nearly three decades. Instead, he rose above the anger to speak out about the healing power of love. He extended his hand to the very people who took half of his life away, and with that became a shining example to humanity that when you love, you live.

Tata Madiba lives on in our hearts forever, and every year when we come together to remember just how much he taught us, it humbles me every time. What will you be doing for your 67 minutes?

A to Z of Life

You want to be happy. Whether or not you know it or believe it, you desire complete and utter contentment in your life.

It is the reason you get up in the morning. It is why work so hard to provide for you and your family. It is the reason you undertake hobbies that enrich your life. It is the reason you pursue things you are passionate about.

As Earl Nightingale said “Happiness is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.” In other words, you feel happy when you are progressing towards something important to you. This is very important because happiness is a journey not a destination. If you will be happy only when you achieve something it is going to be tough most of the time.

Happiness isn’t necessarily your main purpose in life but you aspire to live joyfully whenever possible because those are the moments that you really relish.

Happiness is a state of mind and you can be happy just to be alive. While setting lofty standards for our work and life is always a good sign, it is not good if we are never happy with what we achieve. Therefore, happiness requires a balance between striving for more and enjoying the current success.

In this new series, Mr Sayed Mia presents you every two days with his A to Z ways to cultivate genuine happiness into your life everyday. He believes the recipe of happiness can be baked with the following ingredients; titled, The A – Z of Happiness.


A for Attitude: Your attitude is the true measure of your happiness. If you have a positive mindset you are usually happy. If you are expecting good things to happen you will be more positive which leads to greater happiness. So, keep track of how you feel throughout your day and catch yourself when you feel down. Do anything that works for you to get your attitude back to a sunny disposition.


B for Being: Most of the time we are in the process of doing something. We are always striving for something more but true happiness can also come from just being. Stay present in whatever you do. Just be happy where you are with who you are. Accept yourself unconditionally and just love life for what it is. This will promote your happiness levels. One of the tools for this is to maintain a journal where you can record all your thoughts and it promotes inner peace.


C for Clarity: If you are totally true to yourself and your values you will be happy. That is what clarity is about. Whenever I have experienced stress in my life it always comes when I am not clear on what I want or where I am going. Sometimes this lack of clarity can also come from comparing ourselves to others who we think are more successful. That is a path which will never result in happiness. So really become clear on what you want your life to stand for and where you want to go in your life. This clarity will increase your sense of control which will elevate your happiness levels.



D for Discipline: To me discipline can promote happiness. The type of happiness I am talking about runs deep. It comes from a state where you are putting more into your life. It also comes from living by your principles. If you do take care of yourself through disciplines like eating well, continuous learning, being an excellent time manager, sleeping well and exercising your happiness levels will soar to great heights.


E for Enthusiasm: As Ralph Waldo Emerson said “Enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success. When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with your own personality. Be active, be energetic, be enthusiastic and faithful, and you will accomplish your object. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” Your happiness will directly be a result of the enthusiasm you have for your vision and the actions you take to achieve that vision. When you are enthusiastic you are happier.


F for Forgiveness: Most people carry a burden concerning other people who have hurt them for far too long resulting in a heavy heart. One of the success habits is to forgive everyone for anything wrong that has been done to you. If we think about it nobody in general purposely hurts another and if we understand that it is easier to forgive. It is also important that we forgive ourselves and it is a reminder that we are not perfect. Forgiveness is a great antidote to pessimism.


G for Gratitude: If you want to increase your happiness levels instantly you need to be grateful with what you have. Staying grateful helps you have joy which is one of the keys to a happy life. Writing down everything that we are grateful for is a great starting point towards all the happiness we desire.


H for Health: Health is different for every individual. Considering whatever situation our health is in we should take appropriate steps to ensure we take care of ourselves well. If it means going for a physical every year or regular dental checkups we need to do that. So, taking charge of our health depending on our situation can help us on our happiness journey.


I For Inspiration– When you have a daily routine that you’ve been following for days, weeks or months, it’s easy to get bored and unmotivated. Staying healthy is key, plan your day, exercise your mind, and focus on what makes you happy. Stay inspired.


J for Journey: Life is not a destination; it is a journey to be enjoyed all the way. It is how we bounce back from seeming setbacks that truly measure our heart for exceptional success. The journey is an adventure and an example of this is the life of Steve Jobs. He got fired from the company he founded and still managed to make a great comeback. It just shows to anything can happen but we must be committed to the journey of life.


K for Kindness: Be kind to everyone you meet. Everyone has enough problems on their plate and your kindness could be the best experience they have had for that day. Kindness improves our mood and those around us. “Wherever there is a human in need, there is an opportunity for kindness and to make a difference.” Kevin Heath


L for Legacy: Sustained happiness can come when you align your actions to your legacy. This term has been talked about by the great philosophers of all time and also a lot of authors have popularized the concept of leaving a legacy. Think about what you want to be remembered for and write it down. Look at this written paragraph or document daily. Once you connect with that deeper purpose of your life you will feel happier. M for Meaning: One of the causes of stress is a lack of meaning for life. So, the first step is for us to discover something in our life that we are passionate about. When we find the meaning of our lives we will be happier. We cannot chase happiness and in fact the more we chase it the less of it we have. Happiness is a byproduct of doing things that we consider meaningful for our lives.


N for Nice: This is a simple tactic but surely an effective one. Be nice to everyone you meet and always treat people with respect. Everyone deserves recognition in one form or another. When you are nice to everyone you meet they are happier. When you see others happy your happiness is taken care of.


O for Optimism: The key to happiness lies in optimism. It’s not what happens to us but how we respond to what happens to us that matters. For example, Steve Jobs believed in his products even when he was the only one with the vision. He was not even sure if it will be accepted in the market but he showed undying optimism to see success till the end. Even in his professional nadir he showed enduring optimism and show what one can achieve with optimism and belief.


P for Peace of mind: Ultimately you will enjoy your success only if you have peace of mind. Without it no amount of outside success will be satisfying. You can attain peace of mind when you are grateful for what you have and don’t have a need to constantly compare with others. Set your own sails and go forward confidently in the direction of your dreams. Don’t allow critics to rob your peace of mind. Inner peace leads to happiness.


Q for Quality: Vince Lombardi put it beautifully when he said, “The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.” Go for quality in every area of your life and you will be happier.


R for Recognition: Recognize yourself for all the good things you have achieved. One of the ways to be happy is to recognize that you have achieved a lot in your life and you are doing well in the overall scheme of things. You also need to recognize others for their accomplishments. Recognizing others also leads to your happiness.


S for Self-Esteem: Self-esteem is the cornerstone of a healthy personality. It is important to be comfortable in your own skin. Self-esteem is defined as your reputation with yourself. You are unique and have talents that can help you succeed. The key to self-esteem is to write down the qualities you admire in yourself. Maybe you have passion or discipline, and by acknowledging your positive traits you can enhance your self-esteem. When setbacks occur while you may feel bad it doesn’t reduce your self-esteem. Write down all your successes till now and keep track of your accomplishments. This surely enhances self-esteem. When you have high self-esteem you generally feel more positive about life and do better at work. “Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.” Norman Vincent Peale


T for Temperament: Having a calm, cool, collected outlook promotes happiness. One of the people I admire greatly is Rahul Dravid. He was the epitome of someone who treated defeat and success with equanimity. Even when a bowler says something to him he just talks with his bat. We should all try to follow that. Getting angry usually never leads to good solutions.


U for Unique: You are unique and there is no one else like you in this world. This uniqueness enables you to provide services that enable you to stand out and show case your talent. Keep developing your talents and understand where your strengths lie. If you understand your uniqueness and go forward in developing the required skills success will follow.


V for Values: Defining the values for your life is the starting point of happiness. Values could be passion, discipline, integrity, creativity and humility. Living by your highest standards and values will promoter greater personal well-being.


W for Well-being: Ultimately your well-being is very important to your overall happiness. Take care of your health by exercising, eating right and most importantly getting adequate sleep. Only when you take care of yourself physically and mentally you can enjoy the fruits of your success. Of course, consult your personal physician for a health program that works for your situation.


X for Excellence: Happiness also comes from being excellent in the work you do. It can also come from being good in a hobby that you like. Being excellent in any activity makes you fulfilled. So, choose something that you want to master and your happiness will be taken care of.


Y for Youthful: Being youthful is a state of mind. As a lot of people say age is just a number. Don’t allow your age to restrict yourself from dreaming and going after what you want in your life. Examples of people still achieving at older ages are all around us. Two of them whom I admire a lot are Warren Buffet and Henry Kissinger who is still writing books at the age of 92. This quote from General Douglas MacArthur hits the message home “Youth is not entirely a time of life; it is a state of mind. Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. People grow old by deserting their ideals.. You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair.”


Z for Zest: You need to have an undying zest for life. If you love your life and live it to the fullest you will be happy most of the time. Here is the final quote from Normal Vincent Peale “The really happy people are those who have broken the chains of procrastination, those who find satisfaction in doing the job at hand. They’re full of eagerness, zest, and productivity. You can be, too.”


To conclude all of us can define what happiness means to us. Once we define it we can take proactive steps to ensure we stay on that journey to happiness.

Some of us experience more adversity and painful events in our lives than others. We wonder why our difficulties don’t happen to the “bad” people out there instead of us. It’s the “why me?” phenomenon. Unfortunately, life is not fair.

Bad things will happen. Horrible  circumstances or tragedies will affect most of our lives at some point. You may lose a best friend, your job, get sick, or watch someone you love get very sick. It’s also a certainty that in life we all have to deal with the fact that one day our parents won’t be here anymore. 


It’s okay to cry and feel sorry for yourself and your circumstances, mope around, or get angry. But at some point you must shake it off, let go of the past, and choose to not let it consume you entirely. Otherwise, you won’t be able to learn from the experience and move forward in a constructive way.


Self-Pity is a Choice. Know that. When we fall into the depression of self-pity, we allow it to take control of our lives. We become completely self-absorbed. It is destructive to dwell on negative events and carry that bitterness and resentment forward. When we keep our focus on the hurt, we aren’t focused on taking control of our lives.


If you continue to blame negative circumstances for your place in life, you are giving up responsibility and control to those exact circumstances. But we have two choices – we can choose to spread our misery, or we can choose to rise above it.


Adopting a victim mentality and surrendering to life’s circumstances will not improve those circumstances.

It is up to us to choose how we will respond to them. 


Whether we let them overpower us and bind us to them for perhaps many years, or whether we choose to seek to understand why the event occurred, learn from it and use it to empower us to be wiser, more experienced and learn new skills, is entirely up to us.


Our life’s journey is one of experiencing, learning, adapting to what we have experienced and continually creating a better experience for ourselves and others. Hurt, hard lessons and tough times are all a part of our story, our life’s journey. 


Mr Sayed Mia’s definition of “being a victim” means you choose only to see the negative of an undesirable event and you surrender to the circumstance as a helpless, powerless victim. But as the timeless saying old goes, when life hands you a big lemon we could choose to find some sugar and make lemonade from it. There is always some good to be found in everything, if only we give ourselves permission to earnestly look for it.


So go ahead and have a really good cry, it’s okay. Letting those feelings out can help and be cathartic and healing. Feel the pain and the hurt. Live your reality. It’s okay to do so and even healthy to do. But then let it go!


Don’t let it consume your life. You are not alone or unloved. Remember there are other people in your life who need you. You can’t help anyone else if you don’t help yourself first. Always remember this – You cannot change the past, but you CAN change your future.

GRATITIDE – What does it mean to you?

What does gratitude or bring thankful really mean? Well, Wikipedia describes it as “a feeling, emotion or attitude in acknowledgment of a benefit that one has received or will receive”. So that’s good for the theory, it makes sense, but what about the practical part of gratitude? How does that weigh up?

Albert Einstein famously said that “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

Thankfulness is a state of mind. It’s how we perceive our lives. We can choose to constantly be angry, jealous, negative, sad, and worried, OR we can CHOOSE to do the alternative, look for and find the positive aspects in our lives. We can choose to see the beauty in the small things. A simple greeting to or from a stranger, for example. Be mindful of how good it feels when you smile at someone you don’t know. It’s so simple, yet so effective. Be thankful for all smiles and just like Albert Einstein try and see everything as a miracle.

Do you have a job is not fulfilling you? Or colleagues that you don’t get along with? Maybe you take those negative forces back home with you and the world seems too overwhelming….

If that’s how you’re feeling, always try to remember this; no matter how bad life seems to get, there is always light at the end of the tunnel and Mr Sayed Mia is a believer that everything in life happens for a purpose. It’s just up to us to acknowledge it and make the best out of it. A proverb says: “When eating fruit, think of the person who planted the tree”.

Try something new: every evening, just before going to sleep, count the things you were grateful for during the day. You’d be surprised how good it feels and how well you’ll sleep! At first you might only find one or two reasons to be grateful for, but eventually you will become better and better in perceiving so many things that happen in your life on a daily basis. Waking up in the morning, being one of them.

Always try and concentrate on the things you have in your life and not on those you don’t have. “He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.” — Epictetus

Be grateful to have learned the lessons, to live in the NOW and not dwell in the past or worry about the future . Have faith in the power of now, and know that you are exactly where you are supposed to be right now!

It is an honour and a privilege for me to manage your Public Relations. Not only do I have the honour of working with you, but of learning from you. One of the most crucial lessons I’ve learned from you this past year is that time stops for no one, that life is meant to be lived, that dreams are meant to be chased, and that passion is the key to personal success.

Once in a while, in the blur of life, you meet someone who leaves footprints on your heart and a mark etched on your soul; someone who switches a pencil with a permanent marker. And someone who, no matter what, you can’t seem to wash away. That, Mr Mia, is who you are as a human being – to so many people.

Mr Mia, may you continue to dare to think differently, for its the only way to succeed.

Dare to dream big and fuel your fire to achieve! There’s only one of you, so never change who you are and always be as unique as you are.  Take your own journey, step by step, you’ll continue to excel and go far! I want you to know that you are an exceptional man, and you are unforgettable to everyone who knows and loves you.

There’s a quote from one of my favorite books, “I’ll Give You The Sun,” by Jandy Nelson, that says, “some people are just meant to be in the same story.” And it wasn’t until I look back at almost every single lesson and highlight of my career thus far, that I realized, you were always right there–at every chapter, on every page.

A Touching Story

A very touching story, one we’d like to share with you. Mr Sayed Mia’s son, Dr Ridwan Mia needs no introduction. He is a world renowned plastic surgeon and an angel on this earth. He does what he does not for fame, nor acknowledgement, but because his soul mission on earth is to heal the lives of people who have been affected. He gives hope to every patient he tends to, he treats everyone with care and compassion, and the respect he has garnered in the global medical world is something to be proud of. Dr Ridwan Mia most definitely represents the best of humanity.

“Our hearts were saddened by the story of this young boy, from Children of Fire, who was a victim of a fire lantern burn when he was an infant. Cure Day Hospital Fourways and Dr Ridwan Mia kindly stepped in to help this child with a slow progress of surgeries that will need to be performed to better his life. His happy spirit bought smiles to everyone’s faces today.
